I’m Moving

I totally moved my blog over to my own domain but forgot to write a final post over here to let everyone know!

Way way back in June I bought my domain hippieitch.com and planned to transfer over to my new site. Months went by and I avoided what I thought would be difficult work like the plague. Well two weeks ago I got an email saying this blog was renewing and I’d have to pay the $30 personalization fee or whatever. I’m cheap and the rest is history!

Besides the entire site redesign you may see some design tweaks here and there over the next couple weeks since the ‘look’ isn’t done yet.

I currently have this address hippieitch.wordpress.com forwarding to hippieitch.com but if you could resubscribe to the new site that would be great.

Hope you like what I’ve done so far (I sure do) and I’ll see you over at hippieitch.com! Have a great weekend!

P.S. If you find any errors please let me know!

april’s foodie pen pal

This past month I participated in a blogger pen pal program. You can read about it here. Pretty much it’s a fun little exchange of food gifts that helps bloggers connect with each other.

I got my package right before I left for Australia. I was so pumped!

My pen pal is Roberta and she’s awesome. She stalked me, found stuff she knew I’d like and got me all of it for under $15! Super impressive. I only bought three things for my penpal! I’ll have to try harder next time to find the deals. Tsk, tsk.

So I now have a great variety of healthy and ‘green’ products in my pantry: coffee, trail mix, 2 salsa mixes, chili mix (from the Woman’s Bean Project), local goat milk soap, bean seeds, and doggie treats!

Healthy, ‘green’, and something dog related. She knows me so well. 🙂

Once the girls got a whiff of the dog treats, they began dancing around and performing every trick they know (even though I didn’t ask) to try and get it. It was hilarious so you know I have to show you.

Roary went for the more advanced ‘roll over’…

while Olivia tried ‘shake’.

After a couple more excited moves I gave in. They scarfed those babies down in a second.

They thank you, Roberta and I do too! We already dug into the trail mix for our travels and I can’t wait to try everything else!

If you’re interested in any type of food or meeting people I would suggest signing up for Foodie Pen pals. You’re only required to do it for one month, you’ll meet a couple new friends and get tasty presents! It was a lot of fun and I look forward to joining in again soon.

I’m thinking these types of gifts would be good for birthdays! Instead of buying something for someone that you don’t know if they’ll like, why not expand their taste buds and buy varieties of foods that they love! Fun and functional.

Hmm, who’s birthday is coming up next?! 😉

that one time when lindsay was suzy homemaker… for a week

As you may know Adrienne is off jet setting and playing with Steve Irwin’s animals while I hold down the fort.

To add to the fun, I thought I’d throw some of our own exotic animals in the mix. You may know them, but you have no idea…this is the diary of a very tired babysitter.

Liv is my personal favorite. This rare beast ran away from a cat in its pounce position while we were on a run the other day. I thought it was a wild animal and we were in immediate danger the way she almost made me eat the pavement. I got over it quickly though. Mainly for this face.

....okay, I forgive you.

On to the next wild animal. There’s not much that could be said about Roary that you can’t tie back to these three words: energy, lovin’, and sass. It’s a crazy mix, which I sum up in the nickname “Fatty”. This kid will do ANYTHING for a treat. Hence my personal favorite trick, “sit pretty”.

"this better be worth something good"

I’ve left the best one for last. Best, meaning, this critter is IN-TENSE. But I’ve realized that my dislike of small dogs lightens a little when she puts up with me messing with her…Behold….MOTHER TERESA.

“Do small things, with great love.” ― Mother Teresa

Her face in this picture seems to portray less Mother Teresa quotes and more “Wait until tonight when I wake you up at 5am”….I think it was worth it.

Also, an update on other things that I’ve been keeping alive…The garden!

minus one wilted stem, i'm doin' great!!.....

Phew…so much pressure to keep things alive around here. Three more days and then you’ll have your beloved blogger back! Hasta Luego, friends! Until the next time I’m put in charge of another life…or three….Gulp.

the big 5-0

No I’m not 50, I’m 26, but this is my FIFTIETH post people.

How in the world.

At the end of every week I think to myself, ‘What the HECK am I going to write about next week?’ and every week I think of something. I find this ridiculous, yet impressive.

Where am I going from here? You know, since I’ve had such a long blogging career so far. 😉

I’ve written a lot of lists on this blog so instead of making a list of goals for my next 50 posts I thought I’d humor you with a limerick.

there once was a girl with a blog
who wrote often about her cute dog
now it’s time for a change
more variety and range
let’s hope there’s still time for a jog

🙂

Pretty much you’ll be hearing once again about my projects that I’ve fallen off track with (volunteering, DIY, etc.) along with the topics that I talk about regularly. A little more diversity and entertainment.

———-

I’m writing/posting at an odd time because for the past 44 hours I’ve been traveling (19 hours of flying!) to Australia. I’m sitting here at the luggage claim with a super sore butt and a completely lost sense of time but I’m excited! We’re here for a wedding but will be doing exploring as well. I’m sure I’ll do some recaps of the trip when I get back.

I’ll be gone for over a week but I hope to get you three posts per usual while I’m gone. I’m not sure if I’ll have internet but I know you’ll have at least one post to read since my sister agreed to write something for you. 🙂

I hope to come back refreshed and renewed with no jet-lag. Ha.

I’ll leave you with dog photos because i miss the girls already.

It’s nice to know Aunt Lindsay is taking care of them…

…and that she’ll spoil them well. 🙂

What warm-weather trips do you have planned? It’s so nice to get away!

community & the liebster

When you start a blog or even just start reading blogs, you become part of a huge community. This is one of the reasons why I love blogging. You make friends and support each other. Specifically, the healthy living (including food!) bloggers are awesome influences. They’re so positive and encouraging. You can read about some of their influence on me here.

About a month ago I received a comment from Nicole at Apples & Arteries informing me that she had given me a Liebster Award!

I had no idea what she was talking about so I had to google it. I found out that it’s just a sweet way to let a new blogger know how great they are! A little – I’ll scratch your back if you scratch mine. Since the blogging community has done a lot for me up until this point I thought I should spread the love too!

To quote Nicole:
The rules of this award state that you link your blog back to the person who gave it to you and you chose 5 other people with less than 200 followers to receive the award.  You let them know you have given them the award by commenting on their blog.

The winners… in no particular order ARE:

🙂

elisariva – Elisa mainly blogs about her workouts and training for upcoming races. She inspires me to get off my butt and do something. That ‘something’ might not be the 3000 meters she swam yesterday morning but maybe I’ll clean the whole house or go for a training run!

Cast Light – Kathie writes about how to ‘give your best to others’. If you’re in a slump and need a little boost, she’s your gal. A great read if you’re striving to be a positive person.

My Fascinating Life – Melinda has two kids and still finds time to eat healthy and exercise! She gives a good glimpse into her daily life which is helpful for people like me who are visual learners.

EatDrinkBreatheSweat – Jessica is another healthy living blogger. She is currently in training for a marathon! She gives great insights on her thoughts about running. It’s nice to know that other people have similar issues and successes!

food4theheart – Lauren is a college student who eats healthy and exercises. Very impressive! I especially like her posts on food and her daily eats.

Now I’m not sure if all of these bloggers have under 200 followers but I know they’re all pretty new like me!

Thank you to Nicole for spreading the love! She is a food blogger with a giant love for dogs too. 🙂

Today I also have to mention that it’s my husband’s birthday.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY AL! You’re my best bud.

Al with Roary when she was a little puppy. 🙂

#mmm

I have a problem. No, not my candy problem, another one!

It’s very difficult for me to stay on top of tasks. I’m talking about anything – projects, to do lists, whatever. I get overwhelmed by the large amount of projects so instead of getting up off my butt and taking action, I turn the TV on (or anything else besides what I should be doing) and escape.

To give myself a little boost, I started a hashtag on twitter called #mmm or ‘Moments, Mornings & Mondays‘. If you haven’t read it yet, that post is about making positive choices and how they can have a snowball effect on your life. If you make just one healthy choice, you’re more likely to make another.

Frequently when I do something good, I’ll tweet about it with that hashtag. This gives me a little virtual pat on the back and the motivation to keep up the good work. My love language is ‘Words of Affirmation’ so it works great! <- That book’s a winner and everyone should read it.

Being productive right after we moved in and cleaning the nastiest shower I have ever seen. Note the zip tie holding my hair up. I was sweaty and struggling.

Today started off on the wrong foot because of poor choices last night. I didn’t get out of bed until 7:30 (I wanted to get up at 6:10). I stayed up too late last night watching a movie and so I was still super tired when the alarm went off. Oh but I did floss! That’s a plus. Anyways, I should have started the movie earlier or watched it this weekend but that didn’t happen.

I think the point of that last paragraph is to explain why I’m writing this post. I couldn’t figure out what to write this morning, again, because I was too tired. When I first got up I dreaded writing and now I’ve taken all day to do it just because I was crabby from lack of sleep.

Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE writing and blogging but when things get out of whack I tend to loathe even the smallest task. Eh, that makes me sound horribly dramatic! Oh well, it’s the truth!

Maybe I knew I was going to have trouble this morning because last night I found myself reading posts from Joshua Fields Millburn. He’s one of the authors from the blog The Minimalists. They left high-paying corporate jobs for more simple, fulfilling lives and careers. I don’t want to go as far as them and be minimalists but along with acknowledging my positive habits I think cutting back on things like TV and the internet would really help me stay focused. Here’s a little article they did on that. I actually got rid of cable when my husband was deployed and I stayed on top of my tasks MUCH more than I do now. Now that he’s back I won’t be able to get rid of it again but I should be able to muster up the willpower to leave the TV room and use the time in a more productive way.

Working on a project to display my sister’s many scarves.

I’ve made multiple lists on this blog of things I want to do but for this post/topic I think I’ll just stick to the #mmm hashtag and also minimize my electronics use. While my husband was deployed I didn’t have TV (only Netflix) and I loved it. I was almost always on top of things and I often woke up before my alarm refreshed and ready to go! It’s been a while since I’ve felt that energy.

When I go back and read this post, it seems like it’ll be such an easy fix but I know better these days. Habits die hard. BUT I’ve conquered my candy habit so now it’s on to bigger things. I got this.

Maybe it’s a certain personality type or just the large amount of distractions but I have a feeling that many of us have trouble staying focused these days. So if you’re on twitter, please join me in tweeting about your moments, mornings, and Mondays! I don’t care if the only positive thing you did was do your laundry. High five! You checked something off your ‘to do’ list.

*Virtual pat on the back* or high five, whichever you prefer!

How in the world do you stay on top of your every growing ‘to do’ list?

moments, mornings, and mondays

Try going from a job where you sit for 8 hours all day to a job where you stand for 10. Holy moly. I’m LOVING my new job so far but I can’t wait until I build new stamina! My feet, back, and hips are dying over here.

I’m pooped but I must want to write.

———-

When we’re attempting to live a more fulfilling and positive life (as I am on the quest to do) it often seems overwhelming  – eat healthy, exercise, get enough sleep and so on. I’ve found that it’s really the tiny moments and decisions that add up over time and help me achieve my goal of creating healthy habits.

With every moment I have the chance to choose between something positive or negative. These moments in life begin during my morning routine.

I wanted to start my Monday and week off right since it was my first week at my new job, so as soon as I woke up I sat on the floor beside my bed and meditated for 5 minutes. I think I focused on the words ‘confident’ and ‘calm’ to get me through the day. This tiny choice helped me keep my head clear and positive.

I also flossed and made the bed. These two things are just chores but also positive choices!

monday - like a boss!

I feel so much better if my morning starts off on the right foot. Case in point – Monday I did all three of those things and today I did not. Today I struggled to even get out of bed and I wasn’t as cheerful. If I had done what I was supposed to do I know I wouldn’t have hit the snooze, forcing myself to rush around, skipping a good breakfast habit, my ‘green’ smoothie (with fruit, protein, milk, and spinach).

tuesday - don't bother me

This leads to my realization that if I have a good morning then I’ll most likely have a healthy and happy day.

And then if I start my Mondays off right I’ll probably have a great week! Of course that isn’t always the case but there’s no need to beat yourself up about it. There’s always that next moment where you have the possibility of making a positive choice!

Every little bit counts!

Want to start a your day off right? Here’s how to mediate! You’ll feel like a goofball at first but it’s wonderful once you stop laughing at yourself.

———-

BTW, I’ve finally figured out my blogging schedule! Once my training is done next week, my cooking recipes, DIY projects, and everything else will become routine. I’m looking to blog at least Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. 🙂
